I have had an Uzi for some time. The Suomi is on my list of "soon to gets". It will be SBRd.

Your Suomi looks a bit like the old Beretta 9mm submachine guns that used to be on sale in Spain back in the early 70's. I think anyone could buy one, you just couldn't shoot them - seemed like a reasonable deal!!!
![]() ![]() When I went through the Athens airport in the early '80's, the airport security guys looked like they were at least 70+ years old. Their weapons were the same old Beretta subs. Scary the way those clowns walked around with their weapons. SHOOT, MOVE, COMMUNICATE!!!! |

I got a chance too look at one of the Suomi semi-autos. Now thats one heavy weapon. I can see why its got little to no recoil, I think its heavier then my M1 Garand rifle! The one I seen came with a 72 round drum and two 30 round sticks. Way to heavy for my taste but on solid built weapon.

I have been "delayed" until Tuesday, August 4th. (Big deal.) I'll pick the rifle up on Wednesday, August 5th.
I have held the Suomi, and it is, indeed, a heavy rifle! I also discovered that the carbine's receiver was manufactured by TNW of Vernonia, OR. (between Portland and the coast.) I have been to this manufacturing facility in person, and fully trust their enginieering and foundry capabilities. The rifle is well-built, and should prove to be an excellent shooter. You can go to www.tnwfirearms.com. and look at the Suomi, PPSh and other semiautomatic military arms rebuilt (and manufactured) for civilian use. Scott |

I had a long conversation with the folks at TNW Firearms, Inc. and learned from their Firearms Techncian, John that the major problem that has been experienced with the Suomi SA is one of extractors "wearing out" too quickly.
It seems to vary from rifle to rifle, and only takes place once in a great number of arms. These are expensive to reengineer, but they are working on making them available to keep the rifles running. Other than that, all that they have done to the rifle is replace the static firing pin with one that is "striker fired" and alter the bolt to a semiautomatic configuration. Other than that, the barrel has an barrel extension with an oversized bore (no rifling) welded to the original 12.4" barrel to extend the barrel's overall length to 16.25". That's it. No more, no less. Scott Last edited by gunfan; 07-30-2010 at 09:36 PM.. |

I think that I may just wait until either friday, or saturday, to pick up the Suomi M31 rifle. Johnny Semm (at Shooter's Service Center) is planning on letting me use his tank to remove the cosmoline from the Suomi magazines I had purchased. It will be worth the wait to make certain that the rifle will be ready to "go out and play".
It will be worth the wait to prepare for next weekend! |

The verdict is in... and it is EXCELLENT! I took the Suomi M31 SA out for her "maiden voyage" and she performed better than expected! I'll shout it from the rooftops... THIS WAS MONEY WELL SPENT!
Shelley acted in the capacity of loading hand, and loaded 25 rounds into each of the six 36-round magazines. I fired 150 rounds of Federal Cartridge company 115 grain FMJ RN (product number WM5199) through this beautiful piece of "Parkerized" ordnance. Every magazine fired WITHOUT A SINGLE JAM OR MALFUNCTION! (They should be easier to load after the magazine springs have had a chance to 'break in'). The "old girl" (and a sweet little battle carbine she is) shoots more accurately than I can EVER hold! She IS heavy (over eleven pounds when fully loaded). After the first magazine, there was a smile on my face that even a death in the family couldn't wipe off! After I put the leather sling on her, I expect that she'll be easier to shoot than a .22 match rifle on a 72-degree and slightly overcast summer afternoon! This little carbine has a name (well, she practically named herself) Her name is Sue... (sweet, sweet Sue)! I couldn't have selected a more accurate rifle if I had hand-built the piece myself! If any of you have even REMOTELY considered picking up one of thes marvelous machines, stop thinking about it, BUY IT! For $399.95 + shipping from J&G sales, it will be worth every penny you spend, and THEN some! 36-round magazines are inexpensive and plentiful. 71-round magazines (that load much like the Thompson SMG drums) are just as available! J&G Guns just received a fresh shipment of these carbines, but they won't last! Buy one of these little gems before it is too late! Scott |

Incidentally...
When you take off the barrel and shroud, Which takes all of 30 seconds (if you've never done it before). You can readily see that the original barrel length is 12.4 inches (accounting for both the chamber and the rifled portion of the barrel). If you REALLY want to turn this into a Class II carbine, you can have a Class II Manufacturer "lop off" the extension that has been carefully welded onto the original barrel. He can then "Parkerize" the barrel crown. The carbine will then have the advantage of using the original shroud's integral muzzle brake. Doing this will cause the carbine to lose a little weight, (between three and four ounces). I just can't see paying a Class II Manufacturer the $100.00 or so, on top of the $200.00 Federal NFA Transfer Tax along with the 4 to 6 month wait for the BATF "approval". What's the point? Scott |

One final note. The person that said that the select-fire Suomi (with the three-position Garand-type safety) was so 'controllable' and 'accurate' was absolutely, irrefutably, 100% correct!
The Suomi submachinegun would have been so controllable, that you could literally "write your name" with the stream of lead that leaves it's barrel in the full-auto mode! Go ahead... try accomplishing THAT with a Thompson. (While you're at it, let me know how that works out for you). LOL! |
