Here's my favorite squirrel rifle -- a Stevens Favorite made around 1895 with an Axtel tang sight.

And here's my sporterized .30-40 Krag with the cocking piece sight.

FRENCH-MADE GEVARM MODEL A-3, .22rf LR, 8-rd mag, semi-auto fires on open bolt. Import to North America ended in 1970s. This one is topped off with a Redfield 4X on rail-mounted Weaver tip-offs.

There is a nice storage well built into the pistol-grip butt and when I obtained this rifle earlier this year it still had all of its originl front sight inserts stored there.

The Gevarm .22rfs are noted for being able to eat about any cartridge you want to feed it with no problems. Beautifully made little rifles. Accurate and fun to shoot. There were only four variations, E1, A3, A6 and A7 offered to their North American market. They had one distributor in NA which was located In Canada. I've managed to obtain all but the A6. Still looking for that one.

Here is a Savage Mark I single shot. It can shoot short, long and long rifle. Made in Canada.

Surviving a house fire this semi with a bluing problem is a Squires Bingham Model 20. Made in the Philippines Manufactured for K-Mart Corp Troy,Mich. is stamped on the barrel. Although worn and ugly it's a decent shooter.

I have two favorite rimfire rifles currently. The first is an older Schuetzen style rifle that I got back in the 70s and have fired quite a bit but have now retired because it is too heavy for me to tote in the field.

The second is my current favorite and started as a standard Ruger 77/22. I had an old Win 52 barrel available and fit it to the action, relieved the forearm and bedded the barrel and action. A bit heavier than a standard rifle but still easy to carry around and very accurate.

The barrel was turned down a bit to fit the contours of the action and needs to be reblued. Or maybe not.

A future project involves the Winchester 1890 and a target grade octagonal barrel.

Engagement of the first trigger hook by the sear

This is now 2lbs. It's a sliding sear of sorts, but is highly polished and you just don't notice any creep. Regardless, it's designed for safety (think SKS sear) with a positive engagement angle. It is made for fast, unsupported shots in the field with the 'scope on the lowest level. Overtravel and angles keep the set trigger hooks safe from battering.

Safety on; sear and hammer locked solid

For a target match or rested field shot, the safety is applied and the trigger pulled. This drops the sear into a safety position off the set hooks.

Sear and set trigger hook engagement

Turning the safety back off gently lowers the sear to the secondary trigger hooks. (The safety may be re-engaged to lift the sear off of the set trigger hooks again, if a shot is not taken.) The trigger is at about 12oz at this point.

Modification include the just-discussed set trigger along with the following:

1. Increased LOP by custom fitting a Limbsaver recoil pad for, IIRC, a Remington 700 (maybe Winchester 70?). Whichever, it works beautifully.

2. 20MOA 'scope mount to keep the crosshairs centered, and to provide enough elevation for adjustment for 200yds, should I ever want to lob .22LRs that far.

3. Freefloated barrel. It was supposed to be floated at the factory, but they did a damned poor job of it.

4. Controlled pressure point just forward of the chamber.

5. Pillar bedded, and new receiver bolts - the old ones stripped out.

6. Limbsaver barrel deresonator, along with a two sets of three o-rings each forward of it. I don't want that barrel moving at all, and this is working very, very well.

7. The obvious.

This is a very accurate rifle, and I know I cannot, and never will be able to, shoot to its full potential.
